Amyntaio is one of Greece’s great wine secrets. The PDO Amyntaio zone is the coolest appellation in the country — and the only one producing red, rosé, and naturally sparkling wines from a single grape: the noble Xinomavro.

Sandy soils (many vines are ungrafted, pre-phylloxera), the moderating effect of the lakes and the altitude of 570–750 m give wines of remarkable freshness and finesse. Several wineries in the zone welcome visitors for tastings.

Beyond wine, look for local peppers and beans, honey from the mountain villages, tsipouro, and the celebrated peaches and apples of the plateau.
