At 1,350 metres on the slopes of Mount Vitsi, Nymfaio is consistently listed among the most beautiful villages of Greece — and of Europe. Its stone mansions were built by prosperous Vlach silversmiths and merchants of the 18th and 19th centuries.
Just outside the village, the Arcturos Environmental Centre operates the famous brown bear sanctuary, caring for rescued bears in a natural beech-forest habitat — one of the most visited environmental attractions in Greece.
Walk the cobbled lanes, visit the church of Agios Nikolaos and the Nikeios School, and in winter expect proper snow. The drive up from Amyntaio takes about 30 minutes.
